    Features

This spirea is better than great - it's a doozie!

Spirea is an old landscape staple, so what could one do that could possible earn it superlatives? Well, seedless and non-invasive would be a start; non-stop blooming would be even better. And these are exactly what makes Double Play Doozie spirea the most beautiful, innovative, ground-breaking spirea to ever grace a landscape. Like all of the Double Play® spirea series, the show begins in early spring, when the foliage emerges in blazing brilliant color - in this case, deep red. By late spring, the flowers begin to emerge, a bright, glowing purple-red that truly sings in the landscape. And as summer comes on, the show doesn't stop: it just keeps flowering, and flowering, and flowering. Because it produces no seeds, it puts all of its energy into flowering! It does it all with the same good looks, drought tolerance, and deer resistance that you expect from spirea, too.

Top reasons to grow Double Play Doozie® spirea:

    - Non-invasive! Sets no seed so won't spread into the wild.

    - Blooms non-stop - all the energy it would spend developing seed goes into blooming instead.

    - Deer resistant and very hardy.

    Uses Notes:

Spirea is a landscaping classic, thanks to its neat, mounded habit. It makes a nice edging, accent plant, or perennial garden companion. In the landscape, plant in multiples of 3 for an eye-catching display.

    Maintenance Notes:

Double Play Doozie is as low maintenance as other spirea. You can give it a light trim after its first bloom in late spring if you'd like to see a reflush of the bright red new growth. Remove the oldest, woodiest stems every couple of years or so to keep growth fresh and vigorous.

    • Double Play Doozie is performing marvelously in my yard. We've had drought and an extended heat dome over the eastern U.S., and this spirea looks great. Because this is the first summer I've had spirea and because of the heat dome, I'm watering them more than I normally would. They haven't wilted or turned brown like some of my other plants have that have received the same amount of watering. The flowers are lovely, and I really appreciate their reblooming feature. I have heavy deer traffic in my front yard, and the deer haven't touched the spirea. I definitely recommend Double Play Doozie spirea!

    • I planted one of these 3 years ago in a container. It was not pretty. I thought the winter was going to kill it, surprised to say it came back the second year with beautiful looking red foliage. I decided to plant it in the ground early in the spring. It just kept growing and did a lot better than it did its first year. On its third year I pruned it completely to the ground, and it came back beautifully. It flowered small bouquets of dark pink flowers. I still haven't deadheaded it because even the grey spent flowers add a texture to it. It is currently growing new red foliage . Sometime during the fall of last year, the foliage started changing color. It turns a bit orange, following up by purple, before it goes to a dark bright red. The process takes several days. It outlasted my neighbors burning bush for a month longer. If you live in clay loam soil, I would plant it one inch above the ground, and then mound it up the exposed gap. I have not had good luck planting spireas at ground level, especially when the ground is very wet. I put a layer of compost around the drip line in the spring, and that is all I fertilize it with. I paired it with a Peach Perfection Abelia. The Abelia compliments whatever color the spirea is putting on. Beautiful plant.

    • I love this shrub and planted 14 last year - by entry of driveway and in a bed in front of house. Bought two this year for back of house. The foliage color is wine in the Spring, flowers plentiful and it blooms all summer. It’s also a “win win” for me because it is very low maintenance. I am a senior and while reworking the beds that came with the house we recently purchased, the number one thing on my list when deciding what plant to get is its maintenance requirements. This shrub is easy. Another Proven Winner shrub that I used in our foundation garden along the side of our house is Stonehenge Dark Druid yew. I love yews but they can grow huge. This variety grows 3-4’ tall and 3’ wide and in full sun to full shade. Little to no pruning. The plant sounds like another “win win” for me. I only put them in this April. The plants were small from the site I bought them from (I couldn’t get them locally) but they are fast growing according to their specs. Mine are doing really well and are covered in new growth. They might take a couple of growing seasons before they are fuller which is fine by me because I like watching things grow. They replaced oversized hydrangeas that were very high maintenance in comparison.

    • I bought this plant from a clearance aisle at my local home supply store. On the aisle it looked like it only needed some extra water and TLC, and knowing it was a PW and a perennial in our area, I took a chance and brought it home! I bought the plant in late spring and during the first year it immediately popped right back to life and showed gorgeous foliage and a few but beautiful blooms! By the second year, this plant doubled in size and had an abundance of blooms all year long! The texture of these blooms are unlike anything else in our garden and they bring me so much joy. The color of the blooms start as a lighter pink that fades into a dark raspberry. Each bloom lasts for weeks and they continuously re-bloom from late spring to late fall in our zone. The plant always has breathtaking foliage! The plant’s overall foliage color is a true plant green but the new growth is a dark red like you see in new growth on rose bushes, making the plant even more interesting to look at. This is our third year with this plant and it has tripled, if not quadrupled, in size! The plant already has bunches of buds and the foliage is just gorgeous! It is truly a top performer, and is complemented by almost all who come into our yard. I highly recommend this plant and I am buying another one this season, along with a candy corn spirea! I do not know if the slow amount of blooms the first season was due to the condition that I bought it in, or if the plant was just not truly mature at its 2.5l size, but the second and third years have made the first slow season worth every second! Thank you PW for making outstanding plants!

    • Absolutely beautiful. Planted 5 three years ago as a focal point behind my perennial bed surrounding a weeping Japanese Maple. I pruned them in February 1/3 and they have been spectacular this year. I look for deer and rabbit resistant plants because they think my yard is a buffet. I never got around to fertilizing my Doozies this year but they didn't care. Last year we had a very dry May and this year we've had ample rainfall. They don't care. They just keep blooming. Even the new growth is interesting because it's red. Wish I could add a photo. They're magazine worthy and my social media gardening friends have wowed and drooled over my photos.

    • I purchased 3 of the Candy Corn Double Play Doozie Spirea and I can't brag enough about them. I planted them in front of a porch and they took off growing right away and were stunning with the red tips. Now it is early June and they are blooming the very first year. I love them and would highly recommend to anyone who wants a beautiful easy maintenance shrub. Thank you Proven Winners.

    • This plant is just stunning and its blooms are especially beautiful as cut flowers for bouquets! The first year planted in the ground, this plant did not flower but it had beautiful foliage! Especially in fall! The second year the plant grew a good bit in size but only produced just a few flowers, but WOW the third year +, this plant showed its true beauty! It bloomed beautiful large flowers that changed colors based on their age of bloom! This plant continued to bloom and bloom, specifically starting in May here in zone 7B. I have a lot of flowers and plants and this is by far one of my favorites and a true show stopper in the garden! I am so happy I planted this plant, even though it took two years to adjust, it is definitely worth it!! Just be patient! This plant is planted right below our pink Crape Myrtle where the foliage and texture of the spirea really compliments this tree!

    • I love this shrub! First of all, it is as described with bright red new growth (not just in Spring but as it has continued to grow) as well as showy, dark purple/red buds that burst into a brilliant, almost-red blossom that slowly fades through various stages of pink that take a long time to turn brown. I have 3 that arrived last Oct as teeny-tiny shrubs in quart pots. They leafed out in March, started blooming in early May (zone 8b) and continued non-stop with many new buds continuing to develop and have quadrupled in size. We have had unusual weather each season from the time they were planted which unexpectedly brought on powdery mildew. One was affected quite severely very quickly but responded very well to just 3 treatment applications and bounced back beautifully! Very tough plants, with lots of curb appeal and live up to the name 'Doozie'!

    • We planted 4 of these to replace some mini fountain grass that had died off from the winter freeze in Texas. We just love them, they have grown and have bloomed continuously. Very Happy With.
